Steven Neuman, a Partner with StoneTurn, has over 20 years of experience advising clients and companies on global investigations, monitorships and compliance. He brings significant expertise in conducting work on the ground in Brazil and throughout Latin America.

Named among 21 global, Future Leaders by Who’s Who Legal: Investigations – Forensic Accountants 2021, Steven is well-regarded by clients and counsel as “a go-to person for forensic accounting issues,” who leads an “outstanding practice” that features “fantastic experience in the U.S. and Brazilian markets.”

Steven has overseen countless inquiries into internal fraud which required forensic accounting research, including several Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) matters in Latin America. He has investigated several whistleblower allegations into potential misconduct through performing data analytics, reviewing and examining financial records, testing internal controls and conducting interviews in Spanish and Portuguese. In addition, he has performed extensive third-party due diligence across numerous regions.

Steven has supported several matters as the forensic adviser to DOJ-imposed monitors on various monitorships throughout Latin America. Skilled in mitigating and uncovering risk, he has also helped organizations and their counsel identify country- and industry-specific risk factors through detailed risk assessments and implemented compliance controls to minimize future exposure.

Steven has worked with clients across a wide range of industries in Latin America, including automotive, consumer products, financial services, healthcare, infrastructure, life sciences, media production, oil & gas, real estate, retail, sports marketing, technology, media and telecommunications.

Earlier in his career, Steven was VP of Finance & Operations and President of a telecommunications start-up in the U.S. and South America, respectively, where he was responsible for all aspects of the organization, including financial administration, network operations, sales and marketing. Steven has also advised clients across a range of business issues, including strategy, operations and commercial disputes.

Steven holds a Six Sigma Champion Certification and is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch.

    Expert Witness Testimony in International Arbitration Dispute

    StoneTurn provided expert witness testimony in an international arbitration dispute between the European subsidiary of an American manufacturing company and a distributor based in Brazil. StoneTurn’s work included an analysis of the manufacturer’s sales to the other distributors and quantification of damages due to alleged breaches of contract by the Brazilian distributor. Specifically, StoneTurn quantified damages in excess of $50 million resulting from loss of profits to the European subsidiary and a loss of business value resulting from the alleged breaches of contract.

    Forensic Adviser to Monitor of Large Medical Device Corporation

    StoneTurn served as the forensic adviser to the Independent Monitor of a large multinational medical device corporation. In this role, we provided forensic accounting assistance related to FCPA issues in connection with a deferred prosecution agreement and settlement with the DOJ and the SEC. StoneTurn analyzed and assessed the company’s compliance program and internal controls, which included substantive testing of high-risk accounts and transactions. Our work involved site visits to numerous locations in the world, including Brazil and Mexico. We also assisted the Monitor in preparing for meetings with the DOJ and SEC.
