Ian Cook

Ian Cook, a Managing Director with StoneTurn, has nearly two decades of experience in risk, intelligence and compliance, with a particular focus in the finance sector.

A Brazilian national with broad overseas experience, Ian assists clients with a wide range of compliance-related matters. He is highly skilled at translating best practices into effective, practical strategies, including the management of policies, procedures and monitoring activities.

Along with his compliance background, Ian has extensive experience in the prevention, detection and investigation of fraud. He works with clients, including large Brazilian and multinational corporations, on a variety of projects including due diligence, asset tracing, intellectual property theft investigations and litigation support.

Ian focuses on assisting clients in the financial services industry, including retail and investment banks, broker-dealers, MSBs, fintechs and crypto exchanges. He also supports several clients in the sports and gaming industries.

Ian’s career encompasses roles in both consultancy and financial services compliance. Prior to joining StoneTurn, Ian served in management positions at a global risk consultancy based in São Paulo. While at that firm, Ian led complex fraud and corruption investigations, including cross-border investigations that encompassed elements of intelligence, source work and computer forensics. Ian also coordinated and executed anti-money laundering (AML) reviews and assessments for financial institutions in Brazil and several other Latin American countries.

Ian previously held several positions in the financial services industry, including regulatory compliance and financial crimes compliance roles. He was the Head of Compliance and Money Laundering Reporting Officer at Barclays in Brazil. In that role, he was responsible for compliance advisory and assurance for all product and infrastructure areas in Brazil. He was also the AML officer for the bank’s Brazil operations and the primary liaison between the bank and regulators. Prior to joining Barclays, Ian was a Manager, AML & Sanctions, for ASB Bank in New Zealand, where he developed the financial crimes prevention strategy for the group. During this time, he was invited to assist New Zealand Parliament as an expert advisor from the banking sector during the review phase of the bill that was ultimately enacted as the AML/CFT Act 2009.

Ian is frequently invited to speak at local and regional events on compliance, investigations, AML and sports integrity. He is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), and Certified Compliance Professional by the Brazilian Stock Exchange – B3. Ian is fluent in Portuguese and English, and proficient in Spanish.
