Thomas McCormick, a Senior Adviser with StoneTurn, has more than 30 years of experience in risk, ethics and compliance issues. Specifically, he helps companies to develop and improve controls, risk management processes and culture to comply with laws and regulations in all countries where they conduct business. Tom has worked with clients across various industries, including chemicals and manufacturing, energy and financial services.
Tom is the former Group Ethics and Compliance Officer of BP. In this role, he was responsible for promoting, overseeing and building the Group’s capability to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, BP’s Code of Conduct and related Group Standards. Supporting the company’s executive management team and Board of Directors, he coordinated with business leaders and functions such as Legal and Audit to identify and mitigate significant global compliance risks, including bribery and corruption, environmental and safety, and antitrust / competition laws.
Previously, Tom was Associate General Counsel and Director of Global Ethics and Compliance for The Dow Chemical Company. In this role, he managed the Office of Global Ethics and Compliance, and advised senior management and the Board of Directors on the most effective ways to maintain compliance with legal requirements and company policies. He directed and coordinated activities involving the company’s ethics and compliance processes, including communications, training and internal investigations. Additionally, he formed and coordinated Dow’s geographical ethics and compliance committees in Latin America, North America, Europe and Pacific areas, as well as Dow’s subsidiary, Dow AgroSciences.
Tom joined the Litigation Section of Dow’s Legal Department in 1986 after several years of private law practice. In 1993 and 1994, he was appointed by Governor John Engler to serve on the Michigan Natural Resources Management and Environmental Code Commission, which reviewed and reorganized all of Michigan’s environmental and natural resources laws into a single code. In addition to litigation, Tom also managed Dow’s Legal groups responsible for manufacturing, environment, health and safety, and labor and employment. In 1998, he developed and implemented Dow’s global ethics and compliance program, which he led until 2008, when he joined BP as its Group Ethics and Compliance Officer.
Tom has lectured and taught numerous seminars at professional organizations on significant ethics and compliance topics, including risk management, developing and maintaining an ethical culture, and conducting internal investigations. He is or has been a member of the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association, Ethics Resource Center Fellows Program, Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, and the Corporate Executive Board.
