Matt Whatley, a Manager with StoneTurn, has more than 20 years of experience in cybersecurity investigations. He focuses on digital forensics and incident response and has supported Federal law enforcement, the U.S. Intelligence Community, consulting firms, and enterprise organizations in solving investigations around the world.

Matt has worked with clients across various industries, including banking, private equity, venture capital, social media, construction, manufacturing, healthcare, media broadcasting, Software as a Service (SaaS), and internet technology to respond, contain, investigate, and remediate threats in their environments. Additionally, he performs proactive security services, leading threat hunting engagements and cybersecurity assessments to provide mitigation strategies, identify potential risks and areas for improvement.

Prior to joining StoneTurn, Matt led Security Engineering, Incident Handling, and Threat Response Engineering teams at Red Canary, a leading Managed Detection and Response company, responding to a wide range of active cybersecurity threats. In addition to designing and building new service offerings, his teams partnered with customers to help them prepare for and respond to incidents, providing the resources they need to contain, remediate, and recover.

Previously, he was a Director at a cybersecurity professional services company where he led a team of highly skilled individuals providing digital forensics, incident response, threat hunting, penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, and security engineering services to both commercial and federal government customers.

Matt began his career as a Counterintelligence Special Agent in the U.S. Army specializing in cyber investigations and counter-terrorism analysis. During his time in the Army, he was progressively assigned increasing levels of responsibility in both operational and leadership positions. As a Supervisory Special Agent of a Cyber Incident Response Team at Fort Meade, MD, he conducted and supported multiple joint investigations with national intelligence and federal law enforcement agencies (FBI, DIA, DOE, DCFL, ICE, and DoD OGC). A Subject Matter Expert on evidence collection, handling, and preservation, he led search and seizure operations executing digital media collection. At the end of his time in the Army, Matt served as an Area Intelligence Agent and Senior Advisor at the Pentagon where he conducted threat assessments, performed intelligence analysis, and prepared and provided daily briefings to senior leaders on threats to U.S. Army interests. Additionally, he was a liaison and performed operational coordination with multiple intelligence/law enforcement organizations as a member of the National Joint Terrorism Task Force (NJTTF) at the National Counter-terrorism Center (NCTC).

Following his time in the military, Matt spent the next 10 years working at a corporation that provides mission-focused technology solutions and services for U.S. defense, the intelligence community, and federal civilian agencies. His efforts were critical to National Intelligence and U.S. Special Operations missions responding to nation-state threat groups and terrorist organizations, the results of which earned him and his teams two National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citations and the Joint Service Award for Value Engineering from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Matt has been designated as an expert in the U.S. District Court (Eastern District of Virginia). He is certified as an EnCase Certified Examiner (“EnCE”), and a Department of Defense (DoD) Certified Digital Media Collector.
